HUNTINGTON, Ind. – The No. 20 ranked Indiana Tech women’s basketball team traveled to Huntington, Indiana, on Thursday evening to start their 2023-24 campaign. The Warriors could not separate from the Foresters in regulation but outlasted Huntington in overtime to secure the 80-74 win. The Warriors move to 1-0 to start the season.
Huntington opened the scoring with a 3-point shot made by Gabi Melby and maintained their early lead through the remainder of the first quarter, stretching that lead to 7 at one point, but Tech was able to whittle down the Forester lead to 4 as they entered the first break trailing 13-17. The Warriors scored 6 straight points to open the second quarter and take their first lead of the night, but Huntington would maintain the lead they established in the first quarter and go into halftime with a 4-point 33-37 lead. In the third quarter, the Orange and Black outscored the Foresters by 4 points, which sent them into the fourth quarter tied at 50. The two teams matched each other shot for shot in the fourth quarter, and with 25 seconds left, Huntington found the bucket they needed to tie the game and force overtime. In overtime, Tech scored first and kept their foot on the gas as they stretched their lead to 6 to win 80-74.
Genevieve Decker led the Warriors with a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds while adding 3 assists. Juliana Burris also scored 21 for the Warriors with 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Decker wasn’t the only Warriors with a double-double as Erika Foy posted 16 points and 13 rebounds with 3 assists. Korryn Smith and Taylor Covington were the other two starts for Tech in the season opener, and they scored 9 and 6 points, respectively.
The Warriors travel to Georgetown, Kentucky, for their next game as they take on RV Georgetown College on Friday, November 3, with the game scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
