THREE QUESTION THURSDAY
SPOTLIGHT ON: TIFFANI SELHORST
From Northwest Ohio to Indiana and back again, Tiffani Selhorst has made an impact on students for over twenty-five years as a coach. She has now brought her leadership skills back to the area as the Athletic Director for Defiance College as she continues to leave an imprint on those that she mentors.
ROB PATZ: Tiffani, please give our readers some background about you that led you to Defiance College?
Tiffani Selhorst: I grew up in Northwest Ohio so when this opportunity became available, although I was very happy where I was, I jumped at the chance to apply. I was very secretive with my family and only told my aunt (who works in Defiance) that I was applying because I did not want to get anyone’s hopes up if I did not get the job. When I came to Defiance College for my in-person interview, there were several things that stuck out to me. First it was the people. It seemed like everyone was very passionate about Defiance College and wanted to see the college succeed. Second was the draw I felt with the community. This is a hard-working, blue-collar town and college, so I felt like I was back at home. The third thing was that I really connected with the leadership team. Higher education is drastically changing and colleges and universities will have to change with culture as well if they want to survive. I felt like Defiance College was doing that and putting academic programs in place that are needed to meet the current job market. Last, I felt like I could make a difference. The whole reason I got into coaching was the impact a coach can make in someone’s life. My coaching desires had run its course, so I was ready for the next challenge which led me back home and to Defiance College.
RP: Who is the one person that you would credit as an influence on your life and why?
TS: This is a tough question because I have been so fortunate to have so many people in my life shape who I have become. It always just seems like the right person steps in at the right time to challenge me to grow. If I had to pick someone, I would say probably a little of my grandpa growing up and my dad as of late. They both just seem to know how to fix anything which I believe pushed me to develop problem-solving skills that are crucial in leadership positions.
RP: What are some of the big events coming up in 2024 that you are excited about?
TS: One event that is coming up soon is November 11 when I will get to experience my first DC vs Bluffton football game. We also have a big men’s basketball tournament on the 10th and 11. And for the first time, we are hosting an Esports tournament. So yes, November 11 will be a big day on campus for athletics. On November 18 our men’s basketball program will be honoring the 1973 team that went to NAIA nationals for the first time. I am excited to meet more alumni. I am also excited to see DC athletics grow. We have been down the last few years, but I have a very motivated staff that are looking forward to the move to NAIA and hopefully becoming more competitive.
